Render saves in the bitdeepth you chose via Preferences. When 24 bit is chosen "in-between" steps are rounded to their nearest integer value. When 16 bit is chosen the other bits are just cut off and dynamic range gets lost. So Render can cut data away, but may save discspace.
Most people here have little to no idea about the internal workings of their software. That's ok, since they don't have to as long as it does its work. But sometimes one is wondering about how few answers are given to such straight forward questions while nonsense threads are filling the board all over the place.
