Tascam Fireone working on W7.
Having just updated to Windows 7 after an incredibly nasty problem cropped up in XP which managed to resist all fixes, including a repair install, I attempted to migrate to Windows 7. I did actually upgrade, but the migration didn’t work. The sheer number of VSTs that I will have to reinstall, not to mention other applications, boggles the mind. Last time I had to reinstall it took me 3 weeks to get everything set back up.
The first problem, which has taken me five days to fix, is getting my Tascam FireOne audio/MIDI drivers to work.
So in hopes of saving others endless hours of frustration (I myself just shouted a long string of profanities at my PC after finally hearing sound coming out of Usine, as though the thing had personally affronted me) here’s how I did it:
First, make you must “update” your firewire drivers to “legacy” ones:
1. go to Start Menu > Control Panel
2. in the upper-right corner change the view from Categories to Small Icons
3. click on the Device Manager
4. double-click the IEEE 1394 Bus host controllers
5. right-click the 1394 OHCI and select Properties
6. on the window that appears, click on the driver Tab
7. click Update Driver
8. choose “Browse My Computer for driver software ”
9. choose “Let me pick from a list…”
10. click on 1394 OHCI Compliant Host Controller (Legacy)
11. then simply click “Next” and your firewire drivers will work with the FireOne
You’ll likely have to restart your computer at this point.
Now, if your FireOne still won’t make sounds the next thing to do is get the FireOne 1.0 drivers from Tascam.
You may as well grab the Installation Guide .pdf now, too, since you may recall that the installation for the FireOne is a bit complicated, making you have to start while the FireOne is turned off and then turning it on partway through the procedure.
The newer driver won’t allow you to choose XP or Vista compatibility modes. So you might have to go back to the Device Manager and uninstall the
So now just right-click the FireOne installtion .exe and choose “XP SP 3 compatibility mode” and click the “run as administrator” option and then start the installtion.
It goes exactly as the .pdf says it should, except many of the pop-up windows options have been renamed somewhat. Also, when I installed mine just a couple of minutes ago the dialogue about the Tascam Null Driver never came up, it just said my device was ready to use. When I continued on through the steps all went as planned and I finally have low latency, ASIO-enabled audio in my DAWs.
Good luck to you!
