What is the difference between VSTi and DXi?
Both essentially do the same thing. The difference is that they use different protocols to communicate with the host application.
DXi was developed by Microsoft, whereas VSTi comes from Steinberg.
From a developer's view point, it means that they have to use different libraries and code when writing for one or the other.
From a user's point of view, it doesn't make any difference - both technologies are widely used in most sequencers.
Performance-wise, there is little to separate them. There are also other proprietary formats such as Audio Units (Mac only), TDM, RTAS, MAS etc. but these tend to be "tied-in" to one particular manufacturer or piece of hardware. They all provide similar functionality. However, there are now so many products in VST form that even top-professional products such as Pro-Tools now offer a way to run VST, often in the form of an "adapter" or "wrapper".
